Name: The name of this chapter is Al-Mu’minūn and it has six sections and one hundred and eighteen verses. Its name, Al-Mu’minūn, appears in the very first verse of this chapter in which the necessary requirements are revealed for the success of the believers. Believers must not regard their worldly success as the only measure of success, which is why the chapter is called Al-Mu’minūn (The Believers).
Summary: The first section details the matters which are foundational to the success of Muslims, and it is revealed that success must be built on the foundation of good moral character. Regarding other aspects of success, such as deliverance from enemies and the worldly success of a nation, it is also is achieved by those who base their success on good morals and virtues. This is exemplified by the story of Prophet Noah in the second chapter and the prophets that followed him in the third chapter. The fourth section clearly reiterates that success is not measured by amassing wealth and assets but depends on good moral character and having a relationship with Allah. In connection with the theme, the fifth section affirms the Unity of Allah and refutes evil. The sixth section makes it known that the enemies of truth can never succeed because they walk on the wrong path.
Connection with the prior chapter: The main message of the last chapter is that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) will be successful like the other prophets, but that to accomplish this, wars would have to be fought in which the Muslims would be victorious. In order that conquests, kingship, wealth, and riches are not regarded as signs of success, this chapter reveals what the real elements of success are.
Period of Revelation. Based on unanimous opinion, this chapter is Makkan and based on its subject matter it can be placed towards the end of the Makkan period.
